Machame Route 6 days - From $1,320 Per Person

The Machame route known as the “Whiskey Route,” the Machame Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This six-day itinerary follows the mountain’s southern approach, leading trekkers through five distinct climate zones—from lush rainforest to the arctic summit zone.

The route is designed for experienced hikers or travelers with limited time who are comfortable with consecutive days of trekking at high altitude. While physically demanding, the Machame Route offers excellent scenery, varied landscapes, and a strong acclimatization profile compared to other shorter itineraries.

Machame Gate (1790m) to Machame Camp (3010m)

Your adventure begins with registration at Machame Gate before entering the dense montane rainforest. The trail winds through towering trees draped in moss, where you may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys and a variety of birdlife.

The path gradually climbs along forested ridges and can be muddy, especially during the rainy seasons. After several hours of steady hiking, you arrive at Machame Camp, your first overnight stop on the mountain.

  • Distance covered: 10.8km / 6.7mi
  • Approx. time taken: 6 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Machame Camp (3010m) to Shira Camp (3845m)

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail enters the heath and moorland zone. Giant heathers, volcanic rock formations, and expansive views begin to replace the dense forest canopy.

The route climbs steadily across ridges and valleys before reaching the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. Upon arrival at Shira Camp, enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak and, on clear days, Mount Meru in the distance.

  • Distance covered: 5.4km / 3.4mi
  • Approx. time taken: 5 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Shira Cave (3845m) to Lava Tower Barranco Camp (3960m)

This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the climb. The trail ascends gradually toward Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation rising above the alpine desert.

After reaching the day’s highest point, you descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adapt to the increasing altitude and significantly improves your chances of a successful summit.

Barranco Camp is set in a scenic valley beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, with spectacular views of the mountain’s southern glaciers.

  • Distance covered: 10.8km / 6.7mi
  • Approx. time taken: 8 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Barranco Camp (3960m) to Barafu Camp (4640m)

The day begins with an exciting scramble up the famous Barranco Wall. While steep in places, it is non-technical and rewards climbers with exceptional views.

After crossing ridges and valleys, the route passes through Karanga Valley before continuing to Barafu Camp. This is a long and demanding day, as the six-day itinerary combines what is often split into two separate stages on longer climbs.

Barafu Camp sits on an exposed ridge with dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak and the summit slopes above. After an early dinner, rest for a few hours before your midnight summit attempt.

  • Distance covered: 8.5km / 5.3mi
  • Approx. time taken: 8 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Mweka Camp (3100m)

Shortly after midnight, begin the final ascent under a star-filled sky. The trail climbs steeply over loose volcanic scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim.

As dawn breaks, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Celebrate your achievement, capture unforgettable photographs, and take in the breathtaking views across the glaciers and plains below.

After a brief stay at the summit, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp through the upper forest zone.

This is the longest and most demanding day of the trek, requiring both physical endurance and mental determination.

  • Distance covered: 17km
  • Elevation: 4673m to 5895m (UHURU PEAK) then down to 3100m
  • Approx. time taken: 11 to 15 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Mweka Camp (3100m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)

Your final morning on the mountain begins with a gentle descent through the lush rainforest. The trail can be wet and slippery, so trekking poles are recommended.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate, climbers receive their summit certificates before transferring back to Moshi for a well-earned shower and celebration.

  • Distance covered: 9.1km / 7.5miles
  • Approx. time taken: 3 hours
  • Hotel: Bed &Breakfast
